Plywood is a great material for building cabinets, bookcases and bookshelves.
But unless covered with a layer of wood, the exposed edges often look unfinished.
While wood veneer tape is a simple way to cover the edges, a better way is to glue or nail on solid wood nosing.
It looks good and durable to protect vulnerable edges from high damagewear areas.
It also hardens the plywood, an important feature of the shelf.
As we have shown in this article, if you make it wider than plywood, the extra stiffness will help to prevent the plywood
shelf from drooping.
Unlike thin veneer edges, the wood edges can be routed to produce decorative edges (Photo 8).
In this article, we will show you how to glue and clamp the wood on the plywood and how to polish the top for a perfectly flush surface and almost invisible joints. Pipe clamps ($15 each)
As we are using, there are family centers, hardware stores, and lumberjacks.

The top layer of plywood is a thin layer of wood, called veneer.
It is easy to accidentally Polish through this veneer, revealing the Lower Wood that does not match the surface.

Stop grinding as soon as you see the curved pencil line starting to disappear on the glue joint (Photo 7).
Be careful to keep the Sander completely flat.
Tilting it to the plywood may cause it to flow sand on the veneer.
Tilting it will reduce the noise.
If the sound is not very flush, do it by hand-sanding.
There are many other ways to make the noise completely flush with the plywood.
Experienced carpentry uses sharp aircraft and forklifts.
Router with flush-
The trim bit is also well done.
But both technologies require practice to achieve the desired results.
If you want to dress up the edge of the plywood rack, simply highlight a shape on solid wood nosing (Photo 8).
Be sure to wear safety glasses, hearing protection and dust cover when routing.
When you face the shelves, move the router from left to right.
1 Set the fixture (
One every 8 to 10 minutes. )
Fixture pads and gaskets on the work table.
Adjust the fixture to a slightly wider position than the shelf and nosing. [
2 Lay a thin layer of glue along the edge of the plywood, about the thickness and width of the laces. [
3 Press nosing on the plywood and move it back and forth to apply the glue.
A thin layer of glue should completely cover the mating surface. [
4 Put the shelf in the clip and make a loud noise.
Feel the joints with your fingertips, adjust the noise until when you tighten the clip, the top is the hair width above the plywood. [
Let the glue solidify for about 30 minutes until it becomes rubber-like and begins to change color.
Scrape off part of the hardened glue with an putty knife. [
Wet the surface with a wet rag to show dry glue stains.
Scrape them off when they are wet.
Let the glue freeze for another hour. [
Paint a pencil line along the length of the plywood and overlap it on the noise.
Carefully polish the noise with a Sander and 120
Be careful until the pencil line disappears and the noise is flush with plywood. [
8 clamp the shelf onto the work table and shape the edges of the noise with the router and the forming bit. [
If you are painting plywood, or you don\'t mind the appearance of the filled nail hole, you can simply fix the nail hole in place with glue instead of messing around with the clip.
Complete the nail with a set of nail clippers and drive it below the surface.
Then fill the holes with wood filler or patch compound and polish them smooth before painting or fill the holes with matching putty after paint and paint the wood.

I \'ve been stuck on a lot of shelves over the years.
